Creatures of the Night: The genet (Genetta Genetta)

D300, 18-135mm (50mm), three flashes, IR barrier.
ISO250, f8, 1 / 200

Belonging to the family of viverrids, this small nocturnal mammal is perhaps the most beautiful of our geography, and unmistakable, for the brindle coat that characterizes it.

The very primitive viverrids are extremely adaptable carnivores that have hardly changed in millions of years. From them came the cats and hyenas.
is thought that might be introduced into the peninsula from Africa by the Arabs, that the domesticated to hunt mice.
is now widely distributed throughout almost the entire English territory.

size is small: about two kilos in weight and length of one meter.

His agility and secrecy attached to their morphological characteristics make it an infallible hunter.
your diet is based mainly on small mammals (from mice to even rabbits that are almost of the same size) and birds, but can expand your diet if needed and to supplement with insects and fruits (berries, strawberry, wild apples, ...).

PHOTOGRAPHING Genet

The first step to photograph this beautiful animal is to locate an area where sole move.
can find their droppings that accumulate in prominent places (rocks, tree stumps, stone walls ,...), best known as latrines.
In my case it is a land of pine and scrub oaks with abundant vegetation.

Once located these signs mount a camera-trap camera (those used by hunters) with infrared lighting. It is a waste of time assembling all the flash equipment, barrier, ... if we are not certain that the genet walk in the area.
The videos (and images) that serve us well for us to grasp control schedules, the direction we tend to enter the frame, ...

Once satisfied that our protagonist comes time for your appointment is a matter to be refined in framing and lighting.

On this night, rainy
the effect of raindrops
produced a curious effect.

here for the photos that show you used three flashes at different power:

• The principal is located at a distance of about 2 meters of the genet, in same height and slightly separated from the chamber (30cm) on the right side. A power of 1 / 16.
• The flash against the Silhouette-cutting of the genet, is located behind about 3 meters from the right side of the frame (just enough to not appear in the photo) and half a meter higher than the genet. A power of 1 / 8.
• The third flash is to the bottom, to prevent the discharge of all black (as in the case of the first photo of this repor, which use two flashes at 45 degrees front and one against, leaving the bottom unlit .) In the case of these photos was a power of 1 / 8, but this depends more on the site selected and the distance from the bottom to illuminate.

shoot camera to use a direct reflection infrared barrier.

And some more it occurs to me that you can tell ... that when the ginetilla takes confidence is a joy, puts limits our imagination and ingenuity to make it pass a certain point or grasp showing his agility and beauty.

I leave you with a sequence of more I liked it so far.
I hope to show you in future entries to this sprite in flight, one of its impressive waterfalls.

tufted duck. Four pairs of stilts

Carlos García Antúnez gaps last visited on May 9. Emphasizes the observation of four pairs of stilts. Last year there were two during the months of May and June, and even one attempted to raise, coming to make a nest and lay eggs. But for some reason, this play failed (I guess that human disturbance). See if there is more luck this year.

addition, there were 18 copies of redshank, which is not bad.

Also a dunlin. So, three species of waders, very, very weak ... Several pairs of azulones and a pair of coot completed the cast of waterbirds. Interesting latter already raised last year if I remember correctly.

Also noteworthy is the good step of yellow wagtails (not talking about specific subspecies), aircraft and swallows.
